—Democrats Would Embrace Abortion at Any Time and for Any Reason—

WASHINGTON — Today, Republican leadership presented its “Commitment to America,” a statement of the Republican Party and what it stands for—which includes protecting unborn lives.

“National Right to Life praises Republican leaders for their commitment to women and their unborn children,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life (NRLC). “In contrast, the Democratic Party is pursuing abortion for any reason and at any time in pregnancy.”

The Democratic Party has committed to passing the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA). The Democratic proposal would make sweeping changes, including expanding taxpayer funding of abortion, and eliminating requirements that a woman be given information about the development of her unborn child so she can make an informed decision.

Tobias continued, “The Democrats’ so-called Women’s Health Protection Act is far-reaching legislation that would entrench abortion on demand in federal law and running roughshod over the will of the American people. Democrats would endanger the lives of women and their unborn babies.”

The Democratic bill would invalidate most previously enacted federal limits on abortion, including federal conscience protection laws and most, if not all, limits on government funding of abortion. The Democrats’ legislation would also invalidate state laws regarding parental involvement and consent for a minor’s abortion.

“The Democrats’ legislation would nullify nearly all existing protective state laws,” said Jennifer Popik, J.D., director of Federal Legislation for National Right to Life. “In addition, the Democrats would also prohibit states from adopting new protective laws in the future.”

Popik continued, “The difference between Democrats and Republicans couldn’t be plainer. While Democrats maintain a nearly uniform support of abortion without limits until birth, Republicans seek to protect unborn children and their mothers.”

National Right to Life Endorses Senator John Kennedy

National Right to Life has proudly endorsed U.S. Senator John Kennedy for reelection in Louisiana.  Senator Kennedy has unapologetically voted to protect unborn babies and their mothers from the violence of abortion.  He has opposed President Biden’s radical efforts to codify abortion-on-demand and force Americans to pay for abortion with their tax-dollars. Luke Mixon, the Democratic candidate running against Senator Kennedy, has proven he will do the bidding of Joe Biden and Planned Parenthood by pledging to vote to “codify Roe,” which means abortion for any reason throughout pregnancy. WASHINGTON — Representatives Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) today introduced the Protect Pregnancy Care Centers Act of 2022. The bill would require an Inspector General report on domestic violent extremism against pregnancy centers.

“We praise Representatives Chris Smith and Cathy McMorris Rodgers for this legislation and for their work to protect women and their unborn babies,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “This legislation is a step forward in ensuring that pregnancy centers are able to serve the needs of women in their communities without fear of violence.”

Since the Dobbs decision in June, nearly 70 violent acts against pregnancy centers have been recorded.

Nearly 3,000 pregnancy centers serve about 2 million clients annually, saving local communities millions of dollars by providing services at little to no cost. Many pregnancy centers provide limited obstetrical ultrasounds under a local doctor’s oversight as well as parenting classes. In addition, nearly all centers provide material assistance such as diapers, cribs, and car seats as well as practical help such as connecting a mother in need to local resources that can help her with housing or transportation.

“The pro-abortion Biden Administration has failed to respond to the reports of violence happening across the nation against pregnancy care centers,” Tobias stated. “The Protect Pregnancy Care Centers Act of 2022 will hold the pro-abortion Biden Administration accountable for its inaction.”

WASHINGTON – Pro-life Republican Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and pro-life Congressman Chris Smith (R-N.J.) today reintroduced the Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act. The legislation would protect unborn children at 15 weeks, a point by which science shows that the unborn child is capable of experiencing great pain when killed by dismemberment or other late abortion methods.

In a Fox News poll conducted April 28-May 1, 2022, respondents were asked, “And what about a law banning abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, except in the case of medical emergency – would you favor or oppose that in your state.” Of those responding, 54% favored such a law and only 41% opposed it.

New Rule Violates Federal Law

WASHINGTON— The Biden Administration announced that it would expand abortion on demand through the Department of Veteran Affairs in violation of Section 106 of the Veterans Health Care Act of 1992 which specifically prohibits the VA from providing abortion. The new rule announced on Friday includes a broad, undefined “health” exception that would allow abortion for virtually any reason. National Right to Life opposes the new rule.

“The Biden Administration is once again pushing taxpayer funding of abortion on demand,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Abortion is not health care, and this rule is in clear violation of existing law.”

In a recent CNN interview, VA Secretary Denis McDonough was asked, “Will the VA take this measure and allow abortion services at VA hospitals even in states where abortion is banned?” Secretary McDonough replied, “We’re going to make sure that they [veterans] have access to the full slate of that care, because that’s what we owe them.”

“Despite current federal law and regulations, the Biden Administration has made every effort to promote and pay for abortion on demand using taxpayer money,” stated Tobias. “On the issue of abortion, President Biden has demanded a radical ‘whole of government’ response.”

Despite some media reports implying that a Nebraska teen has been charged for having an abortion, that claim is false.

While Nebraska law generally protects unborn children 20 weeks or older from abortion, the same law provides that “No penalty shall be assessed against the woman upon whom the abortion is performed or attempted to be performed.” [R.R.S. Neb. §§ 28-3,102 to 28-3,111 (2010)[1]]

The charges brought relate to Nebraska law concerning the handling of human remains and the alleged “removing, concealing, or abandoning a dead human body and concealing the death of another person” according to Forbes.

These charges have nothing to do with the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision or Nebraska’s abortion law that was passed in 2010.

National Right to Life takes no position on the particulars of state laws regarding the handling of human remains. Everyone should agree, regardless of their position on abortion, that a 23-week-old stillborn baby’s body should not be burned and secretly buried, as was allegedly done in this case.

Sadly, thousands and thousands of babies will die in Kansas.

Governor McMaster signed several important pro-life bills into law, including the South Carolina Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act, which extends legal protection to unborn children when a heartbeat can be detected. Governor McMaster opposes taxpayer funding of abortion and signed an executive order to prevent South Carolinians’ tax dollars from being used to fund abortion providers.

In contrast, McMaster’s Democrat opponent Joe Cunningham supports a policy of abortion on demand for any reason until birth, and he would use South Carolina tax dollars to pay for it. Cunningham is too extreme for South Carolina.

Attorney General Wilson faithfully defended the laws passed by the people of South Carolina through their elected representatives. Most recently, his leadership was integral to the implementation of the South Carolina Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act. Wilson is running unopposed in the general election.

Indiana’s SB 1 is a phony bill that would do the opposite of what its proponents claim that it would do. SB 1 would fail to protect lives and endanger vulnerable women and their unborn children.

SB 1 was drafted without consultation from any state, local or national pro-life group or expert. Instead, SB 1 was drafted with the advice from organizations and experts who have made abortion on demand part of their mission.

SB 1 contains vague language and ill-defined terms which would actually protect abortion instead of protecting unborn children. SB 1 also would undermine existing protections for unborn children with disabilities.

The pro-life movement calls upon pro-life legislators in the Indiana legislature to reject this travesty of a bill.

Deeply Flawed Bill is a “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing”

WASHINGTON— National Right to Life joins with its Indiana affiliate, Indiana Right to Life, in opposing SB 1.

“Indiana’s SB 1 is a complete disaster of a bill,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “It would fail, in a spectacular way, to protect any human lives and instead would leave women vulnerable to an industry that preys upon women.”

Accordingly, National Right to Life and Indiana Right to Life oppose the bill for several reasons, including:

• SB 1 removes all criminal penalties from, and provides complete immunity for, illegal abortions consented to by pregnant women, except for partial-birth abortions, D & E abortions, and abortions performed without informed consent.
• SB 1 does not require the consent of a woman for an abortion to save the life of the mother. Thus, the physician can abort the child even if the mother objects and wants to carry the baby.
• SB 1 explicitly recognizes, legalizes, and facilitates chemical abortion clinics throughout Indiana by authorizing abortion-inducing drugs to flood the state. The bill facilitates their use through the licensing of current and future chemical abortion clinics throughout the state.

According to James Bopp, Jr., General Counsel for NRLC, “A careful legal examination of SB 1 reveals that, in nearly every provision, SB 1 uses defective language, lack of necessary safeguards, and lack of any effective enforcement mechanism that it results in abortion on demand.”

“The bill is so poorly drafted, it would do the complete opposite of what it claims to do,” said Tobias. “The bill would facilitate and support abortion on demand, leave women exposed to harm without any legal recourse, and establish abortion facilities throughout the state.”

Tobias continued, “The pro-life movement denounces this bill for what it is—a wolf in sheep’s clothing designed to expand abortion on demand in the state of Indiana.”
