WASHINGTON— The following is a statement from National Right to Life:

National Right to Life stands with its Indiana affiliate, Indiana Right to Life, in opposing SB 1.

Indiana’s SB 1 is a phony bill that would do the opposite of what its proponents claim that it would do. SB 1 would fail to protect lives and endanger vulnerable women and their unborn children.

SB 1 was drafted without consultation from any state, local or national pro-life group or expert. Instead, SB 1 was drafted with the advice from organizations and experts who have made abortion on demand part of their mission.

SB 1 contains vague language and ill-defined terms which would actually protect abortion instead of protecting unborn children. SB 1 also would undermine existing protections for unborn children with disabilities.

The pro-life movement calls upon pro-life legislators in the Indiana legislature to reject this travesty of a bill.

WASHINGTON— National Right to Life announced its endorsement of Katie Britt for election to the United States Senate in Alabama.  

“National Right to Life is pleased to endorse Katie Britt for election to the U.S. Senate,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Katie Britt is firmly committed to building a culture of life in her home state of Alabama and across this nation.”  

Katie Britt supports pro-life protections for unborn babies and their mothers.

Katie Britt opposes using tax dollars to pay for abortion. She supports the longstanding Hyde Amendment, which bars federal tax dollars from being used for abortions in many federal programs. The Hyde Amendment has saved an estimated 2.5 million lives since its passage in 1976.

Katie Britt opposes the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act, which really should be called the “Abortion Without Limits Until Birth Act” because it would enshrine abortion in federal law and policies, and it would tear down pro-life protections on the state level.

“If victorious in November, Katie Britt will become the first woman to be elected a U.S. Senator from Alabama. Deeply Flawed Bill is a “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing”

WASHINGTON— National Right to Life joins with its Indiana affiliate, Indiana Right to Life, in opposing SB 1.

“Indiana’s SB 1 is a complete disaster of a bill,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “It would fail, in a spectacular way, to protect any human lives and instead would leave women vulnerable to an industry that preys upon women.”

SB 1 was drafted without consultation from any state, local or national pro-life group or expert. Instead, SB 1 was drafted with the advice from organizations and experts who have made abortion on demand part of their mission.

Accordingly, National Right to Life and Indiana Right to Life oppose the bill for several reasons, including:

• SB 1 removes all criminal penalties from, and provides complete immunity for, illegal abortions consented to by pregnant women, except for partial-birth abortions, D & E abortions, and abortions performed without informed consent.
• SB 1 does not require the consent of a woman for an abortion to save the life of the mother. Thus, the physician can abort the child even if the mother objects and wants to carry the baby.
• SB 1 explicitly recognizes, legalizes, and facilitates chemical abortion clinics throughout Indiana by authorizing abortion-inducing drugs to flood the state. The bill facilitates their use through the licensing of current and future chemical abortion clinics throughout the state.

According to James Bopp, Jr., General Counsel for NRLC, “A careful legal examination of SB 1 reveals that, in nearly every provision, SB 1 uses defective language, lack of necessary safeguards, and lack of any effective enforcement mechanism that it results in abortion on demand.”

“The bill is so poorly drafted, it would do the complete opposite of what it claims to do,” said Tobias. “The bill would facilitate and support abortion on demand, leave women exposed to harm without any legal recourse, and establish abortion facilities throughout the state.”

Tobias continued, “The pro-life movement denounces this bill for what it is—a wolf in sheep’s clothing designed to expand abortion on demand in the state of Indiana.”

“National Right to Life is pleased to endorse John Thune for re-election to the U.S. Senate,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Throughout his life in public service, Senator Thune has demonstrated dedicated and effective pro-life leadership.”  

Senator Thune voted for pro-life protections for unborn babies and their mothers. He also voted to confirm justices to the Supreme Court who are committed to interpreting the text of the Constitution as written.

Senator Thune opposes using tax dollars to pay for abortion. He voted to preserve the longstanding Hyde Amendment, which bars federal tax dollars from being used for abortions in many federal programs. The Hyde Amendment has saved an estimated 2.5 million lives since its passage in 1976.

WASHINGTON— National Right to Life announced its endorsement of Greg Abbott for re-election as governor of Texas.

“National Right to Life is pleased to endorse Greg Abbott for re-election as governor of Texas,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “An ardent defender of the right to life throughout his career, Abbott has worked diligently as governor to protect unborn children and their mothers from the violence of abortion in Texas.”

Governor Abbott signed several important pro-life bills into law, including the landmark Texas Heartbeat Law, which protects unborn babies from abortion when a heartbeat can be detected. Governor Abbott also expanded support and resources available for pregnant women and their families in Texas.

Governor Abbott opposes taxpayer funding of abortion and funding for abortion providers.

In contrast, his Democrat opponent Beto O’Rourke supports a policy of abortion on demand for any reason until birth. O’Rourke has stated that if elected he would work to repeal protections for unborn children and their mothers in Texas and expand abortion in the state. He also supports using Texans’ tax dollars to pay for abortions.

Recently, O’Rourke stated that he would line-item veto state funding for pro-life crisis pregnancy centers under Texas’ $100 million Alternatives to Abortion program.

WASHINGTON — The National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of right-to-life affiliates in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, denounced pro-abortion House Democrats for pushing abortion on demand and failing to vote to protect mothers and their unborn children.

Today’s House votes included votes on two measures brought by pro-abortion Democrats: H.R. 8297, the so-called Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, and H.R. 8296, the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA).

In response, Republican leadership put forward two pro-life measures: a motion to recommit on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and a motion to recommit on the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act.

“Pro-abortion Democrats in the House have a no-limits approach to abortion on demand,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life (NRLC). “Today’s votes show that Democrats are not interested in protecting women and their unborn children. They are only interested in protecting the interests of the abortion lobby.”

H.R. 8297, the so-called Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act contains numerous provisions aimed at preventing enforcement of state laws, particularly when it comes to protective state laws regulating chemical abortion. Further, this legislation could affect state laws involving parental consent and the abortions of minors. Additionally, there are provisions that could be used to shield abusers and human traffickers from liability, perhaps even empowering them to bring civil actions against their victims or the state.

Tobias said, “H.R. 8297 could cause further harm to women and girls by potentially shielding abusers and human traffickers. This bill is reckless but pro-abortion Democrats are more interested in protecting an industry than protecting its victims.”

H.R. 8297 passed with a vote of 223-205.

In addition, the House voted once again to pass the so-called Women’s Health Protection Act (H.R. 8296) with a vote of 219-210.

“The so-called ‘Women’s Health Protection Act’ should be called the no-limits-on-abortion-until-birth act,” said Tobias. “This legislation would have made sweeping changes, including expanding taxpayer funding of abortion, and eliminating requirements that a woman be given information about the development of her unborn child so she can make an informed decision.”

WHPA has already been voted down twice in the Senate.

Also voted on today were motions to recommit the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act and the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Democrats blocked both of these common-sense measures.

Promotion of Abortion the Top Priority for Biden Administration

WASHINGTON — In signing an Executive Order today in response to the pro-abortion Democrats in Congress and the abortion lobby, President Biden confirmed, once again, that the White House is working to appease the abortion lobby to the detriment of women and their unborn children.

“On no other issue, from inflation to high gas prices, have President Biden and pro-abortion Democrats put forward so much effort as they have on abortion,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “President Biden seems to think that Americans’ problems can only be solved by killing its children by abortion. President Biden and the Democratic Party are pouring efforts into promoting abortion more than anything else.”

Concerted efforts by the Biden administration, pro-abortion Democrats in the House and the Senate and the abortion lobby have coalesced into a plan to promote and expand abortion on demand following the Dobbs decision, which returned the debate to Congress and the state legislatures.

President Biden referred to the Dobbs decision as an “exercise in raw political power.” However, in the majority opinion, written by Justice Samuel Alito, the High Court noted:

Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division. It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.

“The Biden Administration and Congressional Democrats continue to promote abortion up until birth,” said Tobias. “Despite the rhetoric, nothing this administration does is going to help women and their unborn children.”

Misinformation and deceptive statements permeated the President’s speech today. The truth is:

• The pro-life movement is vehemently opposed to women being prosecuted for having or seeking an abortion. An open letter to state legislators stating the opposition of the movement to the prosecution of women was signed by over 70 pro-life groups.
• Pro-life legislation explicitly makes clear that treatment for miscarriages does not fall under the legal meaning of abortion.
• No law exists that outlaws the treatment of ectopic pregnancies. No existing definition of abortion applies to the treatment of ectopic pregnancy.

Tobias stated, “Pro-abortion efforts by this administration and its abortion-lobby allies will only harm women and kill more children.”
